A Dek is a Subhed in Journalism
A Dek is a Subhed in JournalismA Dek is a Subhed in JournalismA dek is a journalism term for the summary that appears below the headline of a story on a printed page, usually in a smaller font (but in a larger font than the main body of the article). Dek, like other slang terms editors and copy editors use when they are referring to stories they are working on, is a word you might hear spoken or written on a story during the editing process but is seldom seen in a printed sentence. In journalism jargon, the terms subhed or dek may be used interchangeably, but it is also referred to as a subhead, subheading, slug, subtitle or deck. Why Dek Is Spelled Oddly Why the misspelling? The same reason the word lede, referring to an articles opening paragraph (or graf) is spelled wrong Copy editors write such notations directly on printed proofs of nachrichtensendungpaper pages, and by misspelling the terms, make it clear that it was an instruction or reference for the page layout editor or typesetter, not a missing word to be inserted into the copy itself. What Makes a Dek In the early days of newspapers, one article might have several headlines and subheadlines stacked up on each other, in what became known as a deck or dek. Its unusual for an article to have more than one headline and subheadline in modern newspapers since the news hole (the amount of physical space on the page for news copy) has grown smaller. In traditional print publications, it does not matter if the dek is super short, just a phrase, a sentence, a blurb or even a full paragraph, as long as it helps readers get an idea of the story and make a decision about whether they should continue on to read the full article. The dek informs the reader about the topic at hand, and usually complements or further explains the headline. How to Write a Dek Before the news was published online, requiring optimization for keywords and search engines, traditional print publications like newspapers and mag azines useddeks that were fairly substantive. Headlines were catchy and written to entertain while subheads were expected to carry the weight of explaining what the story was actually about. But with search engines such as Google which drive much of the traffic to online news articles, headlines now play a large role in how a dek is written. To ensure that a search engine can pick up and identify articles based on the content in the whole article, its important that the headline itself is both optimized and to the point. No longer are headlines merely entertaining, instead, they get to the point and address what the article is about without relying on the dek to do the explaining. For online publishing, the dek would most likely be placed in the reserved short article summary area of the website or in the meta description box that accompanies the whole article, to briefly sum up what the article is about. To write a well-formed dek or meta description, consider the following steps S ummarize but dont give away the full story.Consider and incorporate SEO, this includes being mindful ofcharacter limits and keyword inclusion.Let the reader know the type of story she is about to see, i.e. an interview, list, review or QA.Leave out any acronyms or abbreviations and avoid puns (search engines arent clever enough).Be brief and to the point.Use verbs and the articles voice or tone.Provide just enough detail and information to get readers to move onto reading the article itself.

Teamwork vs Individual Work Would You Rather Work on a Team or Alone
Teamwork vs Individual Work Would You Rather Work on a Team or AloneTeamwork vs Individual Work Would You Rather Work on a Team or AloneDuring a typical job interview, youll most likely be asked many different questions related to the job and your qualifications. Some are straightforward, such as Why do you want to work for this company? And some are seemingly silly Do you believe in Bigfoot? But from the practical questions to the just plain oddball ones, there is one that can stump a fhigkeit candidate- the preference of teamwork vs individual work. Now, the reason why this question is tricky is because there really isnt one right answer to give. Does the employer want you to be a team player, and work with a group of employees, or do they prefer individuals who are mora autonomous? When it comes down to it, inquiring about a candidates preference in teamwork vs individual work seems to really be asking if youre an introvert or an extrovert. Chances are, you probably know which one yo u are. Extroverts enjoy working with others, are oftentimes outgoing, and are energized when theyre around others. Introverts, on the other hand, crave quiet time and solitude, and are at their best when they are alone. While it may seem like theres only one choice that would satisfy a potential boss, in reality, there really are positives and negatives to working on a team and individually.Successfully Answering Would you rather work on a team or alone? If you answer Work on a team. The pros to working on a teamThis might seem like the obvious answer to give. After all, collaboration is a key part of a successful team, and you might assume that your boss wants a new hire who can work well with other coworkers. They dont want someone who is going to be antisocial or sit silently during meetings, you reason. Extroverted people can be exciting to be around, and their outgoing nature can make them quite likeable and amenable in a group setting. The cons of working on a team All that aside, stating that you prefer to work on a team could potentially be misconstrued by a hiring manager. They might think that you need other peoples input and advice in order to make decisions. They could think that being on a team is a way to help you to get your own work done. And if youre applying for a remote job, it could be counted against you, since youll need to know how to work independently in order to be successful. If you answer Work alone. The pros of working aloneBeing able to work independently is a soft skill that many employers look for in potential new hires. So whether youre working in a regular office space or remotely, youre going to have to be able to work on your own at various times. Stating that you prefer to work alone conveys to an employer that you dont require much hand-holding to get the job done (which is a big bonus). It shows that youre a good self-manager and most likely able to meet your deadlines without the interference of other team players. The cons of working alone Even if you prefer to work by yourself, you might be hesitant to admit it. By stating that you enjoy working solo, you might imagine that your boss-to-be is thinking that youll be holed up in your home office, unfriendly and unwilling to engage with your fellow colleagues. Plus, you may think that you are sending a message that you dont like people and would prefer to work alone.Teamwork vs Individual Work Guiding The ConversationPoint out the positives of both individual work and teamworkOne good way to discuss this is to incorporate the positive aspects of both options. You can say something like, I enjoy both. I can work both on a team, and work alone. Depending on the project that needs to be done, I can work independently to complete my tasks on time, but I also enjoy brainstorming and collaborating with my colleagues. That way, your potential boss realizes that you like a team environment, but you can also work independently, as well.Mention your preference but e xplain that youre flexible (if thats true). As stated earlier, the question of whether you prefer teamwork vs independent work could be used to determine if youre an extrovert or an introvert- and how that personality type might potentially affect your work performance. If youre an introvert, you can say that you generally enjoy working alone, but explain that you can also work well with others, too. For example, I really enjoy collaborating with a team and brainstorming ideas, but that doesnt mean I cant work independently to get things done. For the most part, I prefer working independently in order to meet my deadlines, but enjoy collaborating in a group to spark fresh new ideas.Cite the job description. When asked about teamwork vs individual work, cite the job description as part of your answer. You can say, In the job description, it read that the right job candidate would be able to work independently, and that very much fits with the way I do my best work, too.Lets say that fo cusing more on either teamwork or individual work isnt implicitly stated in the job description. In that case, you should try to decide ahead of time which of these ways of working is most needed for the job, based on what you presume to know about the position. Try to understand your strengths and how you actually do prefer to work, so you can answer honestly and tactfully. If you come across this question during your job interview, keep in mind that you dont have to choose working independently or as part of a team. If you illustrate the benefits of both working alone and on a team, your boss will see that you are a versatile job candidate who would be a great addition to their company.Want to talk through your job search and career questions with someone? 3 Simple Steps to Help Transition Careers
3 Simple Steps to Help Transition Careers A woman I know was a lawyer for 22 years. She practiced at a prominent law firm in zu sich community, made excellent money, and seemed to be content with life. Yet, last year she gave all of that up when she quit her job to pursue her lifelong dream of owning a restaurant. She is currently in culinary school and works part-time at a local restaurant. Although her income today isnt even one-third of what she earned practicing law, she is quite happy and hopes to become successful in her new career.Perhaps some would call this a mid-life crisis? I simply see it as a career change. Most people will have two or more careers (not just jobs) in their lives. For many, like the woman above, this means radically new fields, but for others it is a small shift in the same general field. No matter what kind of career you plan on pursuing as your second, there are thing s to take into consideration first. Jumping from one steady career into another is often a risky move and not one to be done lightly. Yet, with a few simple pointers in mind, it shouldnt be too hard to go from being a professional in one area to a professional in another.Decide what it is you want to do. This seems obvious, but for many the general malaise that comes with the itch to quit is accompanied by genuine wonder as to what exactly they want to do now. If you dont know what it is you want to do, keep your job where you are and departure researching things that interest you. Find your talents. Take classes at community colleges to see if you have proficiency for something that you have an interest in. If you do, then that is where you need to focus yourself. Dont jump into your new career without knowing exactly what it is you want to accomplish first.Save money. Going from whatever level you are now in your current career to square one in a new one is likely to cause some fi nancial stress. Make sure you are prepared for this in the way of savings. Have enough on hand to pay the bills for six months to a year if needed so you can begin working and not worry about if you are making your former salary or not. If your new career is to start a business, make sure you know what the profit expectations are before diving in and save the difference between the lowest possible profit and where your bills are.Start networking early. The beauty of social media is that networking possibilities are endless. By making sure you get to know industry professionals in the career you wish to move to, you are surrounding yourself with people who can help you when you need it. Even if its something as simple as friend requesting a local chef if you are moving into the restaurant business, being able to ask someone questions about the business without it seeming like one of you is applying for a job is invaluable. Have business cards made up and leave them at businesses in y our field, let people know you exist and are ready to begin. This will mark you as a professional even if you have limited or no experience.Making the transition from one career to the next is often perilous, but worthwhile. Many people who have had two careers only had their first so they could have their second, so make sure you are jumping into something you really want to do. Building relationships and respect takes time, and you may only get one shot at switching careers. Make sure you are prepared and ready for the challenges it presents.

How to boost trust with your boss whether youre new or in the doghouse
How to boost trust with your boss whether youre new or in the doghouseHow to boost trust with your boss whether youre new or in the doghouseYou can use specific methods to make people trust you again at work, but what happens when youre at a new job or have fallen out of favor with your manager, specifically? Heres how to get into their good graces. How to establish trust with your boss when youre a new employeeDont move too quicklyBrenda Della Casa, an editor, author, writer, strategist, digital marketer and founder of BDC Digital Media, writes in Inc. about strategies to impress your new boss during your first 30 days at a new job. One of her tips is, dont rush it, dont personalize it.Building trust takes time and there will be inevitable miscommunications and setbacks as you get to know the people in your new company (and they get to know you). Instead of jumping to conclusions and/or allowing new processes and procedures to exasperate you, stay still, give people the benefit-of- the-doubt and ask for clarification when you need it, she says.Show that you fit inHeather Huhman, a freelance writer, workplace expert, and founder and president of content marketing and digital PR consultancy Come Recommended writes on Glassdoor that showing professionalism will increase your managers trust in you on your first day at a new job.The way you carry yourself, your attitude, and the way you communicate with others will illustrate your level of professionalism to your boss. You should be prepared to hold yourself to the level of excellence your boss expects from you and should also possess a sincere attitude. Your new boss is instilling trust in you, so strengthen that trust by being genuine and professional, she writes. How to get out of the trust doghouse with your bossShow that you have good characterDavid DeStenois the author ofEmotional Success The Power of Gratitude, Compassion, and Pride and a psychology prof at Northeastern University. After writing in the Harvard Business Review that you need to show the higher-ups that you have the right balance of integrity and competence to get your managers trust (based on his book, The Truth About Trust), and that you need to figure out which of those to improve upon, he writes about how to show your integrity specifically.Since being trustworthy, then, rests on sacrificing short-term gain for long-term gain, having integrityrequiresbeen seenas having self-control (aswork by Francesca Righetti and Catrin Finkenauer confirms). But how do you show self-control and integrity? There are two ways, DeSteno writes. The first takes time repeatedly demonstrate an ability to delay selfish gratification for small temptations. For example, work through lunch or take on onerous or tedious tasks that need to get done but no one else wants to do. The second is quicker show a willingness to sacrifice to benefit others when the stakes are high.Dont slip upChrissy Scivicque, a writer, corporate trainer and career coach, and the founder and CEO of Eat Your Career, writes in U.S. News World Report that you need to follow through on promises.Broken promises are the easiest way to destroy trust. If your words arent followed with action, they become meaningless. Therefore, if youre trying to regain trust, you must make sure that you follow through on any and all promises, she writes. In the workplace, it can be easy to let this slide. We say things like, Ill have that done for you today, and then get pulled in a hundred other directions. Before you know it, the promise is broken, sometimes through no fault of your own. But these little misdeeds dont go unnoticed, and when trust is already low, they can become major issues.Scivicque then adds that you should address it as soon as possible stop the fallout if you cant do something you promised you would for reasons outside of your control.

From the President August 2015
From the President August 2015 From the President August 2015 The Challenges of Advanced ManufacturingOne of the most exciting developments in advanced manufacturing is the exploration of supply-chain automation that focuses on improving production flexibility and real-time control for improved performance. The vision for the factory of the future shifts from the historical assembly line and vertical-integration processes to the one of global industrial ecosystems with multi-tiered supplier networks. The technologies feeding this vision are big data analytics, greater energy-efficient infrastructures, and sophisticated control systems that reduce inventories and other costs. For now, however, the basic how, when and whys are still central to the conversation for adopting additive manufacturing processes into geschftliches miteinander and industry. Questions about these challenges brought many engineers to the 2015 Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing (AM3D) Conference I a ttended earlier this month, and a good number of them were asked by engineers in small and medium-sized businesses. The potential savings in materials, improved performance in lightweight structures, and the impact on the supply chain for localized customization for products is radically changing manufacturing, but much is left to learn and widespread adoption is still ahead of us.Taking a cross-disciplinary review of current work by early adopters in aerospace, automotives, medical devices, and other manufacturing applications can help others formulate strategies around particular technical requirements, and together we can resolve some of the challenges. Key among the discussions is how we can scale-up, not only for todays start-ups but also the regeneration of existing manufacturing sectors. Commercial 3D printing is still expensive. We still are limited in available feed materials. Shifting up to digital factories involves complex production systems and networked ma nufacturing.A second key challenge that needs attention is the education and training of engineers and the greater workforce for this new era of manufacturing. Historically, manufacturing is good for economies, jobs and higher standards of living. Economic expansion creates a need for talent that would drive innovation. Lifelong learning opportunities are available for a personalized approach for many people now, but what and how we teach changes. NSF Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program director Rajesh Mehta has said what we need are craft persons with global connectivity. To do any of this, we need wider, broader manufacturing communities to improve the research and innovation infrastructure, which will lead to shorter timeframes between research and application. Regional centers for manufacturing continue to be established globally, ensuring the momentum that will reverberate throughout industries and emerging technologies. I look forward to seeing the pro gress by next years AM3D in Charlotte, North Carolina. Julio C. GuerreroASME President

Boston Unemployment Rate
Boston Unemployment Rate Boston Unemployment Rate Boston Unemployment Rate Boston, Massachusetts has a wide array of industries and job opportunities. Despite the severe economic downturn that began in 2008, Bostons unemployment rate has remained below the national average. Today, the city offers opportunities across a variety of industries and professional sectors. Recent Unemployment in Boston Bostons diverse economy allowed it to remain relatively impervious to the high unemployment rate that plagued many US cities over the past four years. While the Boston unemployment rate did increase during this time, its average was still below the US average employment rate. In 2015, Bostons unemployment rate has continued to drop from 4.6 to a low of 3.8 percent in May, which is lower than the 4.6 percent statewide average. Recovery from the 2008 Recession Bostons recovery from the Great Recession is steadfast. The city is home to many Fortune 500 companies including Liberty Mutual, Boston Scientific Corporation and State Street Corporation, as well as several other companies that are headquartered in the surrounding suburbs. The ability of these companies to recover from the recession allows Boston businesses to hire more people than other cities around the country. Even through tough times, the city remained the 12th largest economy in the world and the sixth largest economy in the United States. Thriving Industries in Boston Since the citys incorporation, Boston has served as a leading port worldwide; it is home to one of the largest international shipping destinations to this day. Other sectors of the economy that continue to see profits are financial services, biotechnology, education, publishing, healthcare, and technology. Staffing industries have also been a large part of the recent Boston workforce boom; they search for candidates with employers from across the country, often recruiting hard-to-find talent in the healthcare and technology industries. Tourism recovered exceptionally well post-recession; Boston has remained one of the hottest tourist destinations for domestic and international travelers. Recent Boston Commercial Successes Boston is a hotbed of new startup companies due to its proximity to graduates from Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These startups, mainly networking and software companies, aim to provide solutions for corporations around the country. Boston is second only to Silicon Valley in terms of startup growth and profitability. One such example is Acacia Communications, Inc., a Boston area startup that provides networking solutions using the cloud. It grew from $300,000 in revenue to over $77 million in revenue in only four years. Industries in Recession Declining industries in Boston are relatively scant; manufacturing was hit hardest by the recession, a decline that aligned with the industrys overall collapse nationally. Other industries that are experiencing a drop in demand include many blue-collar industries such as welding, woodworking, painting, flooring, bricklaying, brick masonry and telemarketing. Construction industries were also hit hard during the recession, in keeping with the national trend; development in Boston has since recovered. Current Boston Rankings According to recent Forbes rankings, Boston is 45th on the list as the best place to do business in the country. This heavily influences the job growth rate, which stands at 1.5 percent annually. Being the only woman in the workplace can have lasting effects
Being the only woman in the workplace can have lasting effects Being the only woman in the workplace can have lasting effects If you work in a corporate environment, you may have gotten used to the feeling of being an âOnly.â Youâre often the only woman at a meeting, the only woman presenting at a conference, the only woman reporting to your manager. You may be so used to being an Only, in fact, that you donât even recognize it as a thing anymore.Whether youâre actively aware of being an Only or not, youâre most certainly not alone in the experience. According to the results of McKinsey Company and LeanIn.Orgâs annual Women in the Workplace report, nearly 20 percent of women across the board identify as an Only on the job. This number increases to 45 percent for women of color. Women in technical roles and at senior levels of management are also more likely to report always or often being an Only. In comparison, just seven percent of men would say the same.âWhat is unfortunate and concerning about the only experience is that itâs associated with a worse experience in the workplace, â McKinsey Company partner Marie-Claure Nadeau - who works closely with the Women in the Workplace study - notes.According to data from the study, women who report being an Only are more likely to experience microaggressions in their professional setting. A microaggression can be anything from needing to provide additional evidence of competence to being addressed to in a less-than-professional way. Women who are Onlys in the office also tend to feel worse than men who are Onlys - they are more likely to feel on guard at the office and to feel the pressure to represent their entire gender any time they say or do something. These issues can have a real snowball effect, causing women to feel uncomfortable, unsafe, and unsatisfied.âWe see these small experiences piling up and leading to a worse experience and a lesser desire to advance and to stick where they work,â Nadeau says of the data. As more women are pushed out of their workplaces by microaggressions and the pressures of seemingly representing all of womankind, there are fewer boss ladies ready to rise in the ranks, which means that the only experience will continue - and even worsen - in the future. Itâs a vicious cycle. In order to help break that vicious cycle, Nadeau and the team at McKinsey Company are big advocates for forming affinity groups at the office. You may feel like youâre constantly the only woman among your own team, but the odds are good that there are other women within the larger organization who feel the same way. Identifying those colleagues and getting into a regular habit of lunches or after-work happy hours may be a good place to start.Tackling microaggressions directly is another great strategy, Nadeau tells us. âThey can be addressed in the moment so that over time, you create a culture thatâs less biased and less open to microaggression,â she says. Speaking out when you hear a coworker say something offensive or ensuring that women and people of color get credit for the ideas they bring to the table can help chip away at the larger issues.âWe want to make the only experience more rare,â Nadeau says.Same.This article first appeared on Brit + Co.

Employee Onboarding Tips
Employee Onboarding Tips Employee Onboarding Tips The experience new employees have in the first days and weeks on the job is critical to helping them fit in and become productive as soon as possible. The onboarding process, as itâs now called, is a far cry from the orientation of old. And itâs not just for corporations. Unlike orientation, onboarding is not a stand-alone event but part of a more comprehensive process. It's an opportunity for small and midsize businesses to do more to ensure new employees can hit the ground running and, especially important for your retention efforts, become satisfied members of the team. The employee onboarding process goes beyond mere practicality. It covers matters ranging from the companyâs strategic objectives and mentoring programs to the workplace culture. Here are some practical steps managers can take to improve a new employee's odds of success. Employee onboarding: easing first-day anxieties Even though new employees have likely been on your company premises previously during the interview phase, their experiences on the first day of work leave a lasting impression. You need to offer a first-day welcome to begin the process of making them feel at home. Alert the receptionist that a new employee will be there on a certain day and time and make sure this person greets the newcomer warmly and wastes no time informing you that they have arrived. Arrange for someone (you, if possible) to personally escort the new hire to his workstation or office. Personally introduce the newcomer to other members of the working team. At some point during the day, meet with the employee to take up where the last interview left off. Let her know how glad you are to have her on board and that you will provide a comprehensive introduction to the company and the job within the next few days. GET HELP WITH HIRING Onboarding during the first week Go over the basics about your company. Itâs fine if some of it was covered in the interview; the new employee will appreciate a review. Your company's basic products or services Size and general organization of the company An overview of your industry and where your business fits into the overall picture (including your chief competition) Your company's mission statement and values Company goals and strategic objectives Your workplace culture Names and phone numbers of people to contact in the event of questions or emergencies How your mentoring program works, if you have one Taking the onboarding process through the second week and beyond A key part of the employee onboarding process is early follow-up. You or supervising managers should meet with employees at predetermined points: two weeks after the first day on the job, a month after, two months after - or at intervals that work best for each job's complexity and changeability. At the meeting, ask new team members how things are going for them. How well do they understand the business and their roles? Do they have any questions that have not been answered? Inquire especially as to the value of training programs. Are they helpful? Do they address the right areas? Are they worth the time being spent on them? What future developmental experiences would employees like to see? These follow-up meetings are also good times to hear employeesâ assessment of the onboarding process thus far. Employees form their opinions early about whether a role is consistent with their career plans and day-to-day satisfaction. If you do it right, onboarding can reduce turnover in your organization. Two Year Enlistments (National Call to Service)
Two Year Enlistments (National Call to Service) Two Year Enlistments (National Call to Service) The Army is dramatically expanding its National Call to Service (NCS) Enlistment Program, commonly called the Two-Year Enlistment. Congress mandated that all of the military services offer the NCS program, effective October 2003. Under the NCS program, a person enlists on active duty for a period of 15 months, following basic training and job training (which makes an average 24-month active duty enlistment period). What Does the NCS Mean for You? Everyone who enlists under the NCS incurs a total 8-year military service obligation. Following the active duty commitment, recruits will have to accept one of the following: Reenlist on active duty (for a time period that will be specified in the original enlistment contract).Serve two years in the active National Guard or Reserves (this means a minimum of drilling one weekend per month, plus training for two weeks per year, plus the possibility of being recalled to active duty by the President for deployments/contingency operations, etc.). After serving for the additional time period mentioned above, the commitment is not over yet (remember, this is a total eight-year commitment). Whatever time remains of that total eight-year commitment, must be spent in one of the following programs: Active DutySelected Reserves (The one that requires weekend drill and two weeks per year training)Inactive Reserves (The program where you can be recalled to active duty if needed, but dont perform weekend drill or annual training)Another program such as Peace Corps or AmericorpsCombination of any of the above As with the other services, the Army wasnt thrilled with the program when Congress mandated it, and instituted it on a very limited basis. The program was only available at 10 of the Armyâs 41 recruiting battalions: Albany, N.Y.; Columbia, S.C.; Miami; Raleigh, N.C.; Cleveland; Kansas City, Mo.; Oklahoma City; Sacramento and Southern California (Mission Viejo, Calif.), and San Antonio, Texas. However, sagging recruiting numbers have prompted the Army to expand the program to all of their recruiting locations. What Are the Benefits of the NCS? Members who enlist under the National Call to Service Program will receive their choice of one of the following enlistment incentives: Payment of a bonus in the amount of $5,000, payable on completion of the active duty service portion.Payment in an amount not to exceed $18,000 of outstanding principal and interest on qualifying student loans. This is also payable upon completion of the active duty portion. An Education Allowance which is equal to Full Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), Education Rates for up to 12 months of education (which currently equates to $816 per month for 12 months of full-time education). An Education Allowance which is equal to 1/2 Monthly GI Bill Benefits for up to 36 months of education (which currently equates to $408 per month for 36 months of full-time education). Note: Recruits who enlist under the National Call to Service program are not eligible for the MGIB unless they later reenlist for two or more additional years. Recruits will be required to stipulate in the enlistment contract which of the above incentives they will receive. 5 Ways to Supercharge Your Personal and Professional Success
5 Ways to Supercharge Your Personal and Professional Success 5 Ways to Supercharge Your Personal and Professional Success Article by Lisa Stephenson We are all in this thing called life together, and what a ride we are on! In the middle of all the madness and mayhem, the peaks and valleys, the lessons and laughter, and the triumphs and tragedies is the beautiful and complex you. You are the writer of your story and the CEO of your life. Life is extraordinary, sometimes boring, and occasionally heartbreaking. You start new projects, change direction, and end things you thought would last forever. Then, you rebuild and do it all over again. You are designed and destined to feel, love, win, lose, and sometimes mess up. Thats your humanness, your strength and your weakness. To set yourself up for a successful, resilient, and happy life, you need integrated strategies that support both your personal and professional success. People often focus on one area of their life too much, which can leave critical relationships and decisions in other areas neglected. A holistic approach that considers everything from your career to your health will serve you best. Here are five ways to adopt such an approach: 1. Play and Plan Big This is your one shot to live an amazing adventure, so be ambitious in your dreams. Consider what you want to be able to say about this life when you are 80 years old and sitting on the porch, reflecting on the experiences you had. Successful people arent necessarily the smartest or best educated; rather, they are simply brave enough to own what they want. Make a plan for the next six months, two years, or 10 years. Get specific about your goals and how you will make them happen. What are you really capable of? 2. Make Yourself Your Most Important Project Investing in yourself is the most important investment you will ever make. Successful people think strategically about how they are living and where they are heading. They set deadlines and consult experts who will support their success. They create a vision, identify obstacles, and review their progress. Consider ways you can learn, adapt, and grow with the resources you have access to. Dedicate time every single week to your own self-development. How can you make yourself, and your future, a priority? 3. Do What Others Arent Prepared to Do The world is full of people who start stuff but never follow through. Successful people do what is required. That means they keep going even when its hard and they dont want to. Dont wait; dont give in. Commit to your plan. When your motivation has passed, it will be your commitment that keeps you going. Be clear about what compromises you are prepared to make, and know your non-negotiables with respect to how you practice self-care. Are you prepared to do what is required? 4. Find Your Tribe Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed, who will challenge you to be more, and who understand your true potential. Your tribe extends beyond friends and family to encompass all people who will challenge you and celebrate you. Identify those in your world whom you trust to tell you the truth. No energy vampires allowed! Successful people rarely create success on their own. Find someone who inspires you, and you will quickly see they surround themselves with people who make them better, too. Who do you know? 5. Get Uncomfortable The greatest learning happens in discomfort. To know what you are really capable of, you have to test the limits of your resilience and abilities. You dont know what you dont know about yourself yet. Holistic success across all areas of your life will come when you have the opportunities to stretch and find solutions. Knowing you can trust yourself is key to personal growth. You are an ever-evolving, complex human with so many things to learn. Intentionally look for new experiences. When was the last time you really felt uncomfortable? - Personal and professional success are yours for the taking when you consciously plan your life. By implementing these strategies, you will be prepared for the curveballs and ready for the opportunities life is sure to bring your way. The reality is that no one else in the world can create success for you. A supercharged plan and approach will absolutely make all the difference. Write a Resignation Letter When Youve Been Promoted
Write a Resignation Letter When You've Been Promoted Write a Resignation Letter When You've Been Promoted It happens often enough, particularly early in someones career. You take your first entry-level job with the intention of working your way up the corporate ladder. This first job is certainly not a position in which you want to spend the rest of your life - thats understood. Then, a year or so into the job, it happens. A new door opens - exactly what youve been waiting for and working toward. Congratulations! Now, of course, youre faced with resigning from your current job with integrity. After all, that job is going to be there on your resume as you continue to advance in your career. You dont want to burn any bridges. Of course, its possible that youve been promoted within your own company and this takes a lot of the awkwardness out of the situation. Otherwise, this example of a resignation letter example can help you notify your employer that youre resigning to pursue a job that is a promotion to a higher position. Tips for Writing a Resignation Letter for a Promotion Give appropriate notice. Generally, that means at least two weeks. This allows your employer to cover your projects and start the process of finding your replacement.Use business letter format. Create your letter as you would any other business letter. This means setting it up professionally with the right information, in the right order. Donât fall into the trap of being overly casual in your resignation letter, even if youâre on friendly terms with your soon-to-be former boss. While you donât need to take a stilted, overly formal tone in your writing, you do need to get your message across clearly and graciously. Include all relevant information. When will your last day be? Are you available to help with the transition? When and how will you follow up with details? These are the most important things to convey in your resignation letter.Be grateful. Itâs also essential to convey your thanks for the opportunity - even if the job didnât work out the way you planned. Be sincere in your thanks: even the worst jobs have something to teach us. Perhaps you made connections that you hope to keep for a lifetime or learned some aspect of the business that will help you in your career going forward. Avoid the negative. Nowâs not the time to vent your frustrations about the job, your boss, or your coworkers. Emphasize the positive and move on.Proofread, proofread, proofread. As in all business correspondence, accuracy is important. Check and double-check for errors before you send. (Although they can, technically, let you go before the end of your notice, so be prepared.) Youve expressed your gratitude and offered your assistance. Youve made it clear that its not your intention to leave your current employer in the lurch. Perhaps most important, youve given a great deal of warning (roughly a months time). Finally, be sure to retain a copy so theres never any question about how you handled your exit from the company.

Five Tips to a Great Skype Interview
Five Tips to a Great Skype Interview Five Tips to a Great Skype Interview Modern advancements in communication technologies have certainly come a long way. Landlines are nearly a thing of the past, cell phones can also look up dinner recipes and the last time we saw a pager it was on display under glass in a History of Tech museum. With these innovations, it only makes sense that companies would take advantage of high-tech upgrades to reach interviewees further afield, opening up the prospective candidate market to far off locations to find just the right pick for their job opening. Conducting interviews via Skype, or similar video messaging technologies, is becoming increasingly mainstream for first and even subsequent round interviews. Companies big and small are utilizing these systems, meaning that candidates who know how to perform well on camera will have a significant leg up on those who are downloading the app for the first time five minutes before the interview. If youâre a newcomer to internet video for interviews, no need to worry. We have the five tips you need to come out of your next Skype interview looking and sounding like a pro. 1. Set the Stage Unless you have a home office set-up ready to go, choosing the location that will serve as the backdrop to your Skype interview can be a bit tricky. In order to appear professional, you should try to avoid common domestic areas of your home such as kitchens or bedrooms. If you do have an office or spare room, inspect your walls and art carefully for anything that may set the wrong tone or impression. While we may all appreciate that cutting edge poster of your favorite grunge rock band from the â90âs, it might not be the right setting to make a good first impression with your potential new employer. 2. Illuminate Your Best Qualities The purpose of conducting a video interview instead of a traditional phone call is to allow the candidate and interviewer to communicate more clearly. Given this, its probably a good idea to make sure the lighting in your chosen interview spot is good enough to let you be seen. Overly bright lighting can make you appear washed out or nervous. Dark lighting can obscure the interviewerâs image of you. Experiment with lamps off camera and bring in external sources if needed in order to ensure the prospective employer gets to view you in the best light possible. 3. Dress for Success or âYes You Do Have to Put on Pantsâ While conducting an interview online over video messaging programs may seem like a cutting-edge approach, this is no reason to drop the typical interview formalities when it comes to attire. You should wear the same clothes that you would wear as if you were sitting in the same room as your interviewer; typically, a conservative suit, jacket or button up. This creates a non-distracting palette and shows that you respect the interview process, regardless of whether itâs in person or remote. 4. Look Here, No, There This next topic is a tricky subject, even for those with a great deal of experience in the internet video messaging game. We all know that making eye contact is an important quality when meeting someone in person. While it can be harder when communicating on line, interviewees should still strive to converse head on. Experiment with different camera views ahead of time. Most video messaging services have preview panes that allow you to see what the other person is seeing, a great tool for finding that perfect angle. When in doubt, face forward to the screen is always a good approach and most laptopâs internal cameras are set up for this to be the ideal angle to see and be seen. 5. Practice Makes Perfect Our final tip when it comes to nailing that Skype interview harkens back to everything from childhood dance recitals to college exams. Practice, and plenty of it, makes you more prepared and likely to excel. Test out your technology ahead of time to make sure youâre comfortable with the messaging platform and that it runs smoothly on your machine. Skype with your friends or family (grandma will most likely be thrilled to volunteer for this endeavor). Try out your outfit, lighting, background and camera positioning ahead of time to ensure youâre making the best impression possible on the big day. Add in a little traditional interview prep and potential employer research, and youâll have everything you need in your interviewing arsenal to convert that online interview into a callback or job offer.
